Camera Suggestion for Newby? - 09-22-2010, 02:11 PM

I'm just starting out and wanted to see what camera some of you suggested for a newby.... I know some of the nicer expensive ones but I can't afford those now since I'm just starting out. So something around $500-600 ish range that shoot pretty good quality pics.

Thanks for any tips...

I would get a Canon 30D with a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 and a Canon 50mm 1.8 for ~600. All used, of course.

Do not settle for a toy go ahead and get yourself a camera. Nikon... you can find a D200 or a D80 in your price range, either of which would be exceptional!

Go and handle some cameras. They all take nice shots, and until you find a niche, they'll all serve you equally well. If you buy new, go ahead and get the kit zoom since they practically give that away, but also get a prime lens (35mm, 40mm, 50mm or something similar). You'll get a faster aperture (better for indoor shots) and you'll learn more about how you compose and shoot.

Are you looking for a DSLR with or without video capability, compact with or without video, a micro 4/3 with or without video? What will you be shooting most of the time? Tri

Buy what you want with the money you have. If you don't like that purchase, sell it. Use the money you have to buy a different camera.
Repeat.
Again.

I will +1 on handling the camera, check out the controls and ergonomics of the camera as Russ said they will all do a good job once you learn how to use them properly.

This man speaks the truth. Go to your local camera store and play with a bunch of cameras ( you will be able to find some decent older prosumer cameras in your price range, canon 30d and 40d, nikon d200) and try to find a 35 f2 (canon) or 35 f1.8(nikon) or a nifty fifty if you want to go even cheaper. most important factore to look at though is finding a camera that is comfortable in your hands and has the features you want. Good luck!

I will echo what has already been said several. Go to a camera store and hold several cameras. See which one fits your hands best and feels most comfortable to hold. Check out all the controls and if some of the buttons on a particular camera feel out of place to you then try a different body or different manufacturer. The brand of camera does not make that much difference but some brands have a more complete line up of lenses and accessories. If you look through the galleries and you won't be able to tell what camera was used to take a shot unless the make is posted with the picture so developing your skills as a photographer is more important than what camera or lens you are using.

Buying used or factory refurbished to start with might be a good idea. That way you can get more for your money and if you make a mistake in your purchase it might be a little easier to sell and start over. The camera that is best for you is the one that feels the best and is the most comfortable when you hold it. If it is too heavy or too small/large for you then you will be miserable and won't enjoy using the camera.

You might drive in to Arlington Camera and look around. I haven't been there but I have read that they have a large selection of cameras and you might have a better opportunity to try several different brands there. I hope you find a great camera and enjoy using it.

+1 to what Russ said, however because Pentax is only used by very best photographers you won't find them in most camera stores. Those camera stores just sell to the herd of lemmings who will buy the canikons

Camera's are just like cars, all are good but it's the glass that counts. Try them all out see what you like. If you buy a canon and don't like it, sell it and try something else. Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Sony are all good camera's
