Good value (speed vs pice) SDHC cards? - 10-05-2010, 05:41 PM

I'm moving into the world of SDHC, and haven't needed to consider speed before now.

What are some "good values" out there for reasonably fast 16 GB or higher SDHC cards? I have a hard time comparing apples to apples with these things, especially when it comes to r/w speeds.

Thanks in advance!

I bought a 16gb "Class 6" Transcend SDHC card from Amazon and I'm disappointed in it. It doesn't keep up when shooting video.
But I have a couple 8gb "Class 6" Patriot SDHC that keep up when shooting video just fine.

Not real sure what the class 4, 6, 10 etc, really means if two from the same class perform so differently.

I'm interested in this too. Just bought my daughter a Nikon D3100 that uses SDHC and shoots video. I'll have to check on the 8GB card that's in there now. Didn't pay much attention, but I probably should have for video...

This is my issue, too. The SandDisk Extreme 30 MB/sec claim to be "Class 10", and there are some good rebates on them now, but I'm still pretty lost.

Now add SDXC to the mix, and it really gets confusing (D7000 is SDXC compatible, but do I want to jump on that bandwagon already?)

I just saw an 8GB Sandisk Extreme class 10 on Amazon for $43 with free ground shipping. Pretty reasonable if you ask me.

Anyone recommend a good fast card reader for these little buggers. I can't find a Firewire model like I have for my CF cards, so I guess I'll have to settle for USB 2.0.

Good news and bad news.
Good news: Price of the card.
Bad news: Lack of Firewire SD card readers.
Why hasn't some enterprising GEEK built a CF/SD Firewire reader? Or an SD to CF adapter?
Huh?

Sometimes I even amaze myself. The GEEK did build it.
SD to CF adapters. A whole page of them at Amazon.

CF cards have a 16bit data bus vs SD(xC) having only 4 bits. I think the reason why they aren't made is that the current speed of SD doesn't really need more than USB 2.0 throughput. From what I read, the SDXC can go faster but the hardware isn't available yet.

It would be great to have a single CF/SD(xC) reader on Firewire 800. Go man go!

I'll be willing to bet that those adapters cost you a bit of throughput, but not having ever tried one, I'll reserve judgement...

And I was right... Reading the reviews gives you about a 50% decrease in throughput. Boo hiss!

I'm interested as I have a FireWire CF reader connected to the spare FireWire port on my scanner connected to a computer with USlowBud ports. One less thing to connect to the computer. Fewer wires are a good thing.

I have a 800 firewire reader for my CF cards but when I was looking for a firewire reader for my SD cards there wasn't any available so I got a Lexar combo CF/SD UDMA reader.
Works fine with a USB 2.0.

Scott I recently picked up a 16GB Extreme for $90, and I looked for awhile to find that price, so the deal you found on Amazon is a good one. The only other SD card I have that performs comparably is the Photofast dual channel SDHC. Both are class 10 cards.

Here is a link to a review of some CF readers. Some of them, like the Lexar I got, have SD readers too.

Rob Galbraith DPI: Card-to-Computer: CF Readers

Here is also a link to a SD reader review.

It looks like the SanDisk ImageMate Multi-Card gives the best read speeds if you use the Sandisk Extreme or Extreme III cards. It goes for $15 on Amazon.

I also ordered two of the transcend 16G class 10 cards on amazon.
Still waiting for them to arrive

They are for the impending D7000
