d300 or d300s? - 10-08-2010, 03:28 PM

time to upgrade from the D200- mostly to get better results indoors wih my 80-200 shooting swimming. from all I have read/heard, only "real" difference is the movie mode, which i won't use, I want better high ISO perfomance.

Any real reason to get the "s"??

Updated processor, a frame or 2 faster without grip, this is just off the top of my head.

Movies, 1 FPS faster without the grip, 1 CF slot + 1 SD slot, a new dynamic lighting mode (not used in RAW), Live view button moved to the back of the camera and a center button in them middle of the command knob on the back.

For me, there wasn't anything on the S model worth $500. I think the processor is the same; the sensor is. I believe they take identical RAW images.

I have both cameras and really enjoy the performance of both. There are a few improvements with the D300s over the D300. For sports, the D300s is faster with the grip and I really never had any problems with noise at higher ISOs. I like the video option except the internal mic does pick up lens focusing sounds, but an external mic should fix that. Andrew mentioned the D7000, take a look at that new model and compare to the D300s in a store.

get the D700 if you have the extra $.
much better ISO performance over the D300.
Fantastic rendention of dynamic range.

I am in love with my D700, and do not miss the crop factor at all.

After I had the D700 for a while, I just got a 1.7x converter, and sold the D300.

With the Converter, it was still a better overall image, esp at ISO 2500/3200...
So I got my crop factor back, so to speak.

And for sports...getting rid of that "scene mode" dial and getting the actually fast usable controls on the D700 body...versus digging in a menu...
well worth the extra bucks.

FPS ? - As you may already realize, its not about machinegunning, but anticipation of the moment...(ok, then machine gun, hehe)

It's fast enough for hockey..

+1 for the D700. Routinely shoot Auto ISO up to 1600 w/o thinking, 3200 & 6400 are highly usable.

You will get 1.5-2.0 stop ISO performance over the D300. I find the D300 a bit noisy, even at ISO 200.
