camera dropped and filter broke - 10-25-2010, 05:04 PM

I think the camera is okay. It was in a camera bag but the filter broke and I can't get it off now. I took a few shots afterward and they appeared fine. Any tips of where to take it in Houston? I am due with a baby in 5 weeks and need this lens to work.

Two suggestions.

1 - Get a thick rubber band and place it around the rim of the filter. This will provide a better grip and hopefully you can unscrew it.

2 - Get a filter "wrench"from B&H.

If this doesn't do it, you may need to have a professional remove it.

Happened to my 70-200. The guy at Archinal put the lens on a rubberized mouse pad, pushed down and twisted. Filter ring came off.

an oil filter remover may work, as will a jar top remover....but the rubber band idea may be cheapest.

Also if you have none of these, you may want to grab the filter with some needle nose pliers and twist....Obviously you will want to remove the lens from the camera first....

BE CAREFUL whatever you do.

My wife just bought something that looked like this:
Multi Jar & Bottle Opener (JO100): Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home
in the Dollar Store in SL.
I think it would work

i used a Sigma 70-200 2.8 for 3 years after I dropped it and the filter broke - the autofocus worked fine - the manual focus was jammed - the one day ( while in Mexico) I was putting on the lens hood on and the whole front of the lens came off in my hand -I would be hesitant to apply a lot of force my self if the lens is functional, rather wait until you can do without it for a couple of weeks and let the experts take care of it - but that's just me
