"Club scene" is now computing.

Save your money. 35/1.8. 85/1.8. Maybe a 50/1.4 if the 35/85 pair doesn't cover everything. Or buy a body with crisp, clear, clean ISO 12,800.

Just responding as another D90 user who's using the Tamron you asked about. I'd say that lens stays on my camera probably around 80% of the time. Thomas actually mentioned it to me quite a while back and I love it.
I traded my 50mm 1.8 for it and since bought the Nikon 85mm 1.8 and wouldn't mind getting the 50 1.4 as I do quite a bit of indoor non-flash shooting.

Why not just go straight for the trio of 1.8 primes? The Tamron may be nice but it ain't never going to shoot at 1.8. Or 2.0. Or 2.5.

ok. you're ahead of me. Start a Prime Fund. Personally, I would get the 35 & 85 first. You might not need the 50.

I just got the Tamron because I was looking at another portrait option with a little more flexibility when I’m shooting groups of different sizes at the church and such. At that point I shoot flash but constantly having to move back and forth. I am heading back down the prime lane also for when I shoot indoors and flash is not allowed and honestly wouldn’t give me the same look I want. Now I just have a couple of options depending on what I’m shooting.

I was really just referring to the Tamron since he asked about since I owned and am shooting with the same camera, but I haven’t used the Sigma so can’t give any feedback for that lens. Heck if I had the money I’d own quite a few more nice primes right now also.

I have the 24-70 2.8 non-hsm siggy and love it. It probably is on my d90 75% of the time and was on my d80 before that. It also runs on my n90s from time to time just fine. A prime it isn't, but for what it is and what it cost me, I think it is an excellent lens.

I had the Minolta version of the Tamron 28-75 with my KM7D, and bought a Tamron when I got my D200. I sold it off because I also had a Nikon 28-105, but it is a better lens than it ought to be.

I have the 28-75 Tamron on my D300s and really like it, especially for shooting families or kids running around outside. that being said, the focus and speed of my 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 are so much better for indoors or portraits (esp the 85). i definitely get more tack sharp images out of the nikkor glass when i have a moving subject (i'm assuming it's because of the quick focus of the primes). sorry that doesn't help with the Sigma question, but when I was researching 3rd party mid zooms, Tamron was the winner, and i've been happy with it so far (been using it about 8 months now).

I've had both. Sold the Tamron and picked up the Sigma. My vote is for the sigma. I shoot on the club scene in dallas with it and have gotten nothing but the best of comments on the photos.

FWIW i'd strongly suggest NOT to take a prime to shoot a club scene unless you have two bodies each with a different prime, and even then it still doesn't beat the option to zoom. A 50mm won't get you anything more than head and shoulders (call it shampoo for short, lol) and something wide like 18mm isn't what you want when you're only shooting one or two people.

My experience is more with the Tamron brand since at work they used to issue this same lens but not anymore since their built quality is not very reliable at least not in any of my 3 copies that they issued me last year. two broke from the middle section of the lens and the third one the front element just came off. I really treat my equipment very good but the built quality is just not there, they now stick to Canon Brand lenses period. With sigma I have no experience but I have a good friend that swears by them, I am more of a Canon kind of guy my self I personally own nothing but Canon L series lenses and I have never had an issue with them.

Good Luck!
