I used the D700 and the 70-300mm VR to shoot soccer today, and must admit that it was an excellent combination for kids soccer. Responsive, quick to focus, and sharp. The 80-400mm is just a slug, and unless you nail the focus, the kids are moving to quickly for this thing. SO I think that the standard combination shall be either the D2x w/ 70-200mm (or 70-300mm) or the D700 and 70-300mm. For a Prosumer lens, the 70-300mm is astonishingly sharp, and on either the D2X or D700 just slams into focus thanks to the AF-S motor in it. While not a 70-200mm, it does not give up much to the Pro lens.
