Can't decide 50D or 7D? - 11-22-2010, 03:23 PM

So I have been shooting with a XT the past 6 yrs and I'm now looking for a different body. I can get from Canon a refurb 50D for $720 or the 7D for $1120.

I'm leaning towards the 50D bc of price. I don't have a computer (fast enough) that will allow me to edit video so that doesn't attract me towards the 7D. I do like the fact that I can raise the ISO (with less noise) in low light situations. So what are the other advantages other than video with 7D?

I have a child coming in April so this is the main reason for a new body. Below is my current setup I have

Sigma
24-70? f2.8
30 f1.4
10-20 f4.0-5.6

Canon
50 f1.4
70-200 f4
Speedlight 580EXII & 430EXII
80 f1.8(hopefully soon)

Thanks In Advance

I have a 40D and a 7D. That 40D is going bye bye and i'm getting another 7. I don't care about the video. But i love being able to trigger a flash off camera using the pop up flash...and i love the new focusing system.

The beauty of nikon CLS... you can get that function in a sub $800 body :)

I was never really impressed with the 50D from my short use... not much of a step up from the 40D, so based on becca's comment, I would suggest the 7D :P

Well that would solve my other problem with the ETTL cord and wanting to go wireless

As long as the camera and flash are within line-of-site of each other. If not, then it's Pocket Wizards or some other radio transmitter.

Your lens lineup looks pretty good (you might mean an 85 f/1.8 rather than an 80 ... the 85 is a great lens). If the choice is between the 50D or 7D, definitely go for the 7D. You might not think you care about video, but you'll eventually get a new computer and might (esp. with a kid on the way) want to try it out.

So I would have to set the 580 as a slave and not master. Oh well

Yea the cheap guy in me keeps saying 50D. Hopefully I can pick up the 85 sooner than later
