50d or 60d? - 11-24-2010, 06:45 PM

I have been using a canon XS for a couple of years now and want to upgrade soon. At first i was just thinking the 50d, but then saw the 60d. there area some pros for the 60d since it has a swivel screen and video.

does anyone have experience with either or both? i am leaning towards 60d but it is a bit pricier.

What lenses do you have, what is your budget and what do you want to shoot? The best option may be neither.

Thomas is right, but if it were me I'd go with a 40D, $600ish gently used. Difference between 40 and 50 is mostly negligible (IIRC, but the 60 has enough difference.

Unfortunately, the 60D isn't just an updated 50D. Adding video capture, the body is smaller, aluminum instead of magnesium, uses SD card instead of CF cards. The articulated screen gives options that are not available with a fixed screen, but will have problems in bright sunlight. There's no clear answer to this question.

Which one fits your hand better? Do you see yourself needing the video capture? Are you currently invested in SD or CF cards? Both bodies can use EF-S lenses, so whatever you have now will work.

Stephen hit on many of the points that I was thinking, but the main one being an SD card. If someone was to give me a 60d as a present, I believe I would sell it and buy me something else.

From all the things that I have seen about it, it is mainly a step up from the T2i instead of a step from the 50d.

My suggestion would be to know why you want to upgrade and then find the camera that fits those needs.

If you know that you want video, then the 50 is out. If you know that you want to use a cf card, then the 60d is out, if you know that you need a pc port for flash on the side, then the 60d is out...

There are a whole lot of things that are different about the two cameras... Which ones are important to you?

A used 5d might be the best bang for your buck

these are the lenses that i have:

Sigma 24-70
Tamron 70-200 f2.8
canon 50 f1.8
also i have a speedlite 420 ex
Right now all i have are SD cards

I used to shoot a lot of lanscape and architecture but lately i have started shooting portraits, mostly outdoors. I am trying to get in to wedding/engagement type photos

As for a budget i dont really have one yet.... this might be a present, but if I had to put a number on it maybe around $1000. SO maybe these 2 choices might not be right, I am open for other suggestions.
