Effective December 6, 2010, Canon will start to provide as a chargeable service, a locking mode dial modification for the “EOS 5D MarkII” and “EOS 7D” digital single-lens reflex cameras.
This modification is available, for a fee, to owners of these cameras who would prefer a Mode Dial which locks in place and can’t be accidentally moved during normal camera operation.
For USA residents, the pricing of the locking mode dial modification service for EOS 5D Mark II and 7D cameras has been set at $100 per camera as of December, 2010. (Pricing and availability subject to change without notice.) For further details, see contact information for inquiries below.

Won't some gaffer's tape do the same thing for a lot less money?
Seems like a dumb move to not include it in the first place. Like on the original 5D.

I have changed mine a few times getting it out of the bag, or switching shooting orientations. Would have been nice to have it come with the lock, not sure if I would add it for 100.00 bucks.

I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing some ways to make the swap as a DIY project.

Thanks for the post about the mod though. Never know who might need this.

Hope this lock isn't going to become a standard feature. Don't believe gaffer's tape will hold the button in but maybe super glue will. | | | |

Amazing thing: My antique $300 Elan IIe has a mode dial lock. Go figure. Everytime a new and imporved camera comes along, something good is missing so they can add stuff we don't need.

I'd buy mine that way, but don't know that I want to send it off for a retrofit for $100. They don't say how long they expect it to take to complete the work. I suppose they don't know what demand they'll have, but I'd hate to send it and be told it'll be back in a month. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
