Help with shooting Basketball game! - 12-03-2010, 02:38 PM

I have had a couple people asked my wife and I to come and shoot an Intermediate basketball game. My wife will be using the D700 with a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 (wish I had another D700 love that camera in low light). So my options our between my D90 with 24-70mm 2.8 Nikkor or using my father in-laws Sony A700 with a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8. Not sure which one will do better in low light I have never messed with the Sony before. However the D90 shoots ok in low light but sports in low light not so sure. Thanks for your help and suggestions
-Dave

I have never shot with any of those cameras but a lot of it depends on the gym lighting ( or lack of lighting) I shot my son's game (7th grade) in a dungeon last night but used the 70-200 on a 7D and the 24-70 on a 1DmkIII and had to shoot at iso 4000 to get any decent shots. Also I would get there before the game and shoot a custom WB unless you are shooting RAW then you can adjust in post.

Stick with the Nikon's. You already know them, and I think the D90 will best the A700 at the higher ISO's you're going to need.

If your wife is shooting with the 70-200, then you can sit a little closer and use the 24-70.

Yea over the weekend I tested it out and the D90 is the better choice for sure. Thanks for the advice.

David, try sending a PM to Garykohs. He shoots a lot of HS basketball, and he used to use an A700.

Put the 24-70 on the D700 for near court and 70-200 on the D90 for far court.

That would be a good setup if we were both shooting the same game but there will be two games going on at the same time..

Do you have specific kids you are shooting or what? Do you need to get both teams, or just one team from each game?

Please report back with the results, i hear the AF on the Tamron 70-200 is notoriously slow and hunts forever especially low light and fast paced sports. Im very curious to know how well it performed.

I don't know if there is a "right" lens. I have had pretty good luck with the D90 and the 85mm 1.8 so far. Of course I am shooting in an arena which has horrible lighting and makes it all but impossible with a D90 to get good shots even with a 2.8 lens. The 85 1.8 at least gets me into the "acceptable" range.
