120 Color Slide Conversion - 12-19-2010, 08:13 AM

A friend has come into a stack of 120 color slides he would like to get converted into digital and prints.

Is there a retail scanner out there that will do the trick or should he just go with a commercial outfit to have them processed. Thanks in advance...

patrick.

Epson has several that do medium format.

The 4490 is well thought of and less than $130.00

The 500, 700, or the 750 will work also.

How many are there? There are prices listed online. AZ Labs does it. There are others.

Is the film mounted in slide mounts? That will present a problem to any of the Epson scanner film holders. They are designed to accept film directly. Not mounted.
If the film is unmounted, Kevin covered most of the bases. Add the Epson 4990 to his list. They come up for sale on the used market & also at Epson's online store. I think Canon also offers a medium format scanner. Allow a lot of time to learn how to scan well. Then allow a lot more time for actually scanning keepers. Then allow time for spotting. you will need storage capacity. 6x6 TIFF files scanned at 2400 dpi (max. you need with these desktop scanners) will be in the neighhood of 150Mb each.
If the quality of the originals is good, a properly scanned medium format original prints very well.

Thanks so much for the excellent info...good point about the mount issue, didn't think about asking him that...quaility should be great, it's my understand they were done with a Hasselblad by someone who knew what they were doing...

He may want to take the path of least resistance since "it's only some family snaps" but there may be some jewels in there he might want to custom do...

thanks again...

patrick.

You may want to check these guys out. They do a good job and you only pay for the scans you want in case some don't look good because of the age and condition of the resource file.

I have scanned mounted 6x6 slides on my Epson 4990 with good results. I used the scanning area mask to define the space I have to work with and then align the slides right on the glass to just fill the space. The thickness of the paper mount seems fine, from a focus point of view.

I welcome comments on any picture I post... Thanks.
