The Nikon and Sigma I have found for $500 each and the Sigma I have found for $766. That makes a difference. I want autofocus for my D5000 too. Also in a previous post I said I had a D90...that was a BIG oops. I ONLY have the 5000. But nevertheless I LOVE IT!!!

Only buy from a reputable place, ditch the tripod and put more money in your glass, (your shooting a fast moving subject and tripods are for stationary objects unless you have the proper tripod head which costs more than a tripod) get the very best lens you can afford, 300mm is the bare minimum and I would try to get the 400mm. Oh and buy from a reputatable place! Trust me on buying reputable! You don't need a tripod these are small lenses. Hope this helps.

the next most obvious question...what determines if a website is reputable?

bhphotovideo.com, adorama.com, jr.com, abesofmaine.com are all reputable

Or visit Houston Camera Exchange or Camera Co-Op

oh and the tripod is not necessarily just for the beach. I want one for other purposes. I just want/need one "in general". And I already traded points for it directly :-(

BH and Adorama are 2 that most here use. Be carefull because there are thousands of bait and switch places. If its too good to be true then it most likely is!

Store Ratings & Reviews - ResellerRatings.com - Find Trusted Stores is helpful.

Here's a used Sigma 100-300 f4 for Nikon on Craigslist in Houston. I have no affiliation to the seller.

Amazon.com: Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF APO DG OS HSM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo

The Sigma that you are considering gets high marks on Amazon - link above. However, it appear to be large and heavy vs. the other two.

I've owned the Tamron and the Nikkor that you are considering. I believe the Nikkor is sharper, but the Tamron still produced good photos. However, if it was me - I'd go with the Nikkor.

I'd go with the Nikon 70-300 VR. 300 is still too short for surfing, but the 120-400 is big, and you'll need a good tripod.
