Sdhc memory - 01-02-2011, 05:25 PM

There is so much contradicting information out there about sdhc memory. As I am about to buy a 60d I will need to purchase SD memory. I'm trying to get transcend 32gb class 10 but don't know if I "have" to have class 10 or if class 6 will work for me. I have no prob buying class 10, other than the fact it seems to be sold out all over with christmas just passing

Anyone have any insight into class 6 or 10 SD media? Please share

SDHC devices are normally backward compatible. A class six card may transfer/write more slowly then a Class 10.. but it SHOULD work. Class 6 cards write at about 7.2 mbps..class 10 at about 12.
If you don't already have one, you'll also need a card reader that supports SDHC.

Thank you for the input Kev, I am aware it is compatible however. My concern is more related to buffering and such. The 60D only fires @ 5.3fps, will I get too much lag with a Class 6, and will a class 6 work for HD video, or am I going to need a class 10?

Rob Galbraith does not have the 60D listed yet, but you can check out what he has listed for other cameras

Canon's MINIMUM recommendation is a Class 6 card for shooting HD video.
At 5.3 fps I wouldn't think you'd see much lag when shooting photos.
Given the write speed difference between a Class 6 card and a Class 10 card, you might see some lag with the Class 6 card depending on the camera/card card buffer size and the frame rate/resolution used during capture.

the 60D shoots at 5.3 fps because the files are so big. I have a D7000 with all class 6 cards; haven't had an issue with video even at 1080p24. As for continuous still shooting, I don't shoot more than 8-10 frames at a time, so I don't think i've filled the buffer completely.

and I know you didn't ask, but if you're shooting anything of importance, I wouldn't put my trust in cheap memory cards. I only use sandisk and have not had any card fail or get corrupted yet. Too many times have my friends come to me with cheap cards that failed asking if there was anything that can be done.
