    Nikon D300s vs D7000

Considering purchasing one of the two. Anyone have any feedback on these regarding performance, etc. Thanks

they have the same image sensor, it's just a matter of what bells/whistles you want. I got my wife the D300s and it's a really rad camera. from what I gather, the D7000 is based off the D90, which is what i have. the D7000 is really just an upgrade in a couple of cool features... that I probably wouldn't be using normally anyway.

both take amazing photos, pretty much the same as far as I'm concerned. but the button configuration is different. I'd just go play with both to see what you think.

    Not the same sensor....but close.

the d300s has more focal points and faster burst, can shoot in TIF format, otherwise they are very similar.

Rich is correct, the D300s shares a sensor with the D90 and D5000, not the D7000. The D7000 is a 16MP camera whereas the D90 and D300s are both 12MP.

The D7000 is slightly slower in burst rate, has better video capabilities, uses both SD card slots instead of the D300s' use of one CF and one SD, has better low light capabilities, is not quite as weather sealed, has the newer 2016 pixel RGB sensor for metering vs the D300s' 1005, has a newer more advanced AF system than the D300s (albiet with fewer points), is slightly smaller and lighter, has two user defined settings on the dial wheel and is a few hundred cheaper.

So unless you need one more frame per second (two with the D300s grip), more AF points or more weather sealing I say get the D7000.

I recently had to make the same choice and went for the D7000 and am quite happy.

My opinion is that the 300s offers only a few advantages over the d7000. Unless you plan to make use of these advantages, you are better off with the d7000.

welp, as soon as a client pays me (and my d80 sells, in that order) i'll be upgrading to the d7000.

my question is, where is has been the best place to pick one up. that is, who has more of them in stock lately?

i've checked (online) arlington camera, wolf, cameraworld, adaroma, and b&h but they're all sold out. amazon had one for +$200 but i'll just wait. i do not want to purchase off ebay, or just "some store" online. i'd rather it be somewhere i recognize (online), or a store i can walk into.

I placed an order on December 22nd on Amazon, even though their site said they were out of stock.

I was surprised that it ended up shipping on the 23rd with free overnight delivery and arrived on the 24th of December.

I had been watching BHPhoto, Amazon, Adorama for weeks and finally just relented and put in a backorder.

If you can't find it locally, I highly recommend trying Amazon.

I placed my order on 11/14 with J&R. They invoiced me on Thanksgiving day, shipped the next day, and I had it on Monday. Either I got someone else's camera or was just lucky, because no one seems to be shipping that fast.

I wouldn't get either. Wait for the soon to be released D400.

    Both good cameras.

I think it boils down to a cost and feature comparision.

The $1200 for a new D7000 is several hundred dollars less than a new D300s will cost, and you get better HD video with the D7000.

I've owned the D300 and now the D7000 and find them surprisingly equal, even though the D7000 is so much cheaper.

You can't go wrong with either, but I decided to sell my D300 after I got the D7000 since I felt the newest technology is always better than technology that is over two years old.

+1 for wait on the D400 or whatever Nikon decides to call the D300s replacement. Rumors are that it will be announced soon but it could still be 6-12 months until we see it.

When the D400 comes out I will be selling my D3000 and keep my D80 for a backup.
