Professional Lens Cleaning? - 01-07-2011, 07:15 PM

I wasn't sure where to post this...

I recently bought a metal mount 50mm f/1.8 from a garage sale and wanted to get it professionally cleaned. Would I need to send it back to Canon or could I take it to Wolfe Camera (I haven't had very good experience with them), or somewhere else you guys recommend?

Any help would be much appreciated!

-Daniel

How much did you pay?

It may not be worth it.

Cleaning the outside elements is very easy.

But if you insist. Call PCR in Houston.

They are a site sponsor and do good work.

I got the lens, an EOS Rebel film body, and a Canon flash for really cheap :)

That's the thing, they may want more than you paid just to clean it.

Unless there's anything apparent on the inside of the lens, a lint-free cloth designed to clean lenses would do the trick. You can even use a liquid cleaner designed for the purpose, too, just spray it on the cloth rather than directly on the lens.

Be very specific about the lens when you call PCR. I called last week about a Sigma 50-500 that I wanted looked at. They told me that they did work on them, but after I drove an hour down there, I was told they didn't work on Sigma. Needless to say, I was perturbed.

So save yourself some potentially wasted time and make sure they can work on your lens.

BTW, PCR fixed a couple of old cameras for me and did a good job (and fairly priced). I just wish they hadn't given me the wrong information over the phone this time.

There was a slight language barrier with the lady I spoke to; although I was non mislead, I can see how it could easily happen. They are very pleasant to deal with.

Hello,

Sorry about the misunderstanding and the inconvenience. My family is aware not to take in Sigma lens equipment for repair, but maybe there was some confusion there.

The ideal solution is to send your lens into Sigma USA:

SigmaPhoto.com - Service & Support

Hopefully, they will get back to you in a timely manner and the estimate for repair will be reasonable.

Happy shooting!

Btw, very nice photos of fireworks in your July 4th 2010 flickr gallery.

Warm Regards,

Yasir M. Hakim
