hellllooooooo TPF - Lens Question - 01-09-2011, 08:25 AM

It's been awhile, kinda hit a rough patch!! But just wanted a lil input.... I finally upgraded from the 300d (heck yes the bad a** camera is going to be put in the bag as a back up... lol) ....... I recently purchased a 60d, just have to wait to go back home to get it. Right now I have the kit lens that came with the 300d and a Canon 75-300 AF lens... I am wondering what other lens would be a good addition. As of right now I take photos of cars, and people in outdoor settings. No studio work yet! I have been told to get a Canon 50mm f/1.8 from several friends, or opt for the same Sigma lens. So pretty much what would you all recommend! I do this as a hobby, but plan to do it as a side income! Let me know!!! Thank You!

Adrian

PS heres a couple photos from a few shoots.

all these were taken with the 75-300 lens on the 300d

The 70-300 isn't a well regarded lens. If you are going to do portraits then the 50 1.8 is a good lens considering the price. Stopped down it will get pretty sharp but I was never a fan of the bokeh. At times the bokeh looked really nice and at other times it was horrible.

For a crop camera, I would highly recommend the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS. It is an incredibly sharp lens and arguably the best walk around lens for a crop canon camera. The constant 2.8 aperture will allow you to take pics at car shows with inadequate lighting without having to push your ISO up too high.

If you want a great zoom lens with a longer focal length, I would look at the 70-200 F4 if you are on a budget. The optics are superior to the 70-300 you currently have. If you have a bit more money then I would look at the 70-200 F4 IS (won't help with fast moving subjects though) or the 70-200 F/2.8 IS Mark II.

I don't want to be the guy that just posts up links to other threads, but Sonny posted up a link to an article, that may prove to be helpful. Here is the like to the thread....http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...-new-dslr.html

Also, the picture of the car is awesome!! Is it a Mazada RX-7? Has the body lines of one.

I have a Sigma 17-70 2.8 that never comes off the camera. Very sharp, and works GREAT in the studio.

Not as wide as the others listed but I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 that stays on my Nikon D90 as my standard lens I use. A good copy is very sharp and wont break the bank.
