I will add a little perspective here I hope. I have owned both Nikon and Canon. I used to own a D700 and switched to Canon ending up with a 7D, which ergonomically is similar to the 5D II. Without a doubt, the Nikon D700 is easier to use because of all the buttons and dials, versus a more menu driven system with Canon. Having said that, Canon's scroll wheel is lightyears ahead of Nikon's D-Pad. I like having the 3 kings on the D700 and was disappointed they went away in the D7000. I will say that I MUCH prefer the Nikon CLS system to Canon even with the 7D having a commander function. Lens wise, this is such a toss up but if you plan on buying a D700 then plan on buying the newer 70-200 2.8 VR II because the original vignettes. Canon L glass is without a doubt magnificent and cheaper overall. As most have said really either way is a win for you. If I had an unlimited budget for bodies, lenses and accessories I would purchase Nikon because for me personally the WOW factor was simply higher with the D700. Having also said that I have been WOWed many times by images from the original 5D. Best of luck to you and I am in a similar boat as I am rebuilding my entire inventory, but probably going to invest more in glass and less in a body since bodies come and go. |
