Canon 5dMKII or Nikon D700? - 01-14-2011, 10:25 AM

Since it truly appears that Olympus is dropping the game on DSLR, I see little point in investing more into the line. I was ready to spring for the E5 this spring or the 35-100 F2, but just don't see much continuation of the line.

Since I shoot mostly portraits and headshots I am considering going FF with a D700 or D5 MKII. One of my biggest reasons would be needing less space to get the same perspective.

I know the two cameras have major differences in pixel count, but also realize good enlargements don't have to have HUGE pixel counts to be good. What other points separate these two cameras? They weren't available when I was working in a camera store and really haven't followed them in the last few yrs.

5D2 has video, D700 does not.
D700 has better AF
5D2 has nearly twice as many pixels (I love the cropability)

As for ergonomics, I love the feel of the 5D2, but Nikon people will tell you they love the feel of the D700. All depends on what you like.

I have had the fortune to handle both cameras since my sister is a Nikon shooter and they both are just amazing cameras. I have to say that for enlargements 21MP does make a big difference in detail and sharpness on larger prints IMHO.

All the Gold Ring glass, but I see you wouldn't know, since all you have is 'L' to play with.

Welcome to the forum but you know it's not the equipment that counts!

When I was selling cameras it was always, to me at least, Canon for lenses and Nikon for multi flash setups. I don't do much, at least currently with multiple speedlites, so I am somewhat drawn to the Canon side. I do like the Canon printers and it just seems that Canon communicates more to the users.

Yeah I know, C vs N pot just hadn't been stirred up lately

I can only speak for the D700 & it is a fantastic cam!! This is probably a decision you will have to make AFTER trying each to see which fills your needs best. It seems if you actually need the 21 megs & video then the 5d2 might be the thing.
The D700 is very good at high ISOs. Its Af system is superior with the 51 points & 15 crosspoints. And as was said the CLS flash system with the wireless built into the cam is a nice feature. Both cams are great tools & what ever you end up with , you probably will be a happy camper!

Knowing what I know now, which is very little, I would make my choice based on the lens selection that fit my style. Every year there is a bigger and better camera body. Cameras depreciate like cars but lenses last. The exception to the rule is the original 5D and I am certain the MKII will continue the tradition.

You'll have to excuse him. You just have to expect Texas Tech fans to act a certain way with other people. Its hard when you are the red-headed step child of Texas.
