Canon 50mm f/1.8 MKII way too load - 02-01-2011, 09:15 AM

I just got a copy of this lens and it tried to take a few shots. Here are my observations:

1. The motor makes a loud screetching noise when adjusting the focus (and way louder than other copies i had).
2. The focusing ring is spinning absolutely free in AF mode and pretty loose in MF
3. The area around the screw is all scratched up (could be repaired)

The seller never listed these problems and said that the lens is "excellent condition" with some scratches. Also, the front cover is 52mm.

Am I missing something?

Take it back to the brick and mortar store where you bought it.

Bought it second hand ? Caveat Emptor.

Thanks. I never thought of it. I bought it on ebay, via Paypal and told the seller that i wnat to return for a full refund. There have been many good ones on ebay lately but it's always hard to tell the condition. I guess the cosmetics are important. Otherwise it looks like they all have dust and noisy focusing motor.

It's a really common lens so I would look locally so you can test it out. I picked up a brand new one off Craigslist for $90 with box and warranty card. On something like this where the lens even brand new isn't that much money I recommend a local buy just for situations such as what you're describing.

Are you talking about Mark I (metal mount) or Mark II (current plastic version that retails for $92 shipped)?

ebay is a great marketplace, although a virtual monopoly in it. I've had good experience overall (I'm more of a buyer).

Seriously, can anyone confirm that the motor on a 20 y.o. lens is supposed to be screetching sound and focus ring spin freely in AF? Please?

Perhaps giving Canon a call might help you understand the "noise" issue you are mentioning.

I have never needed to use it but I hear that ebay is very focused on user satisfaction, you might want to give their customer relations people a call (if the seller gives you any grief)

Thanks. I resolve the problems directly with the seller and I'm returning the lens.

This thread is about technical aspects. Anybody knows the lens well to comment on it?

Nope. My $50 Canon zoom from 1998 doesn't do any of that.

My plastic mount was pretty smooth and I never even heard it focusing motor though it was way too slow. Metal mount feels so much better. I just love the lens. I will keep trying to get a decent copy.

That's a noob thing, honey moon period before I start bugging you about 85 and 135mm primes :)

Neither does my Nikon lens for my Bronica from 1965, still buttery smooth focus.

I was talking about the lens you started the thread discussing about, the MKII plastic one. I bought mine when it was around $120 online so $90 was a great deal. So which one are you discussing cause it seems your discussion goes from the older version to the new one?
