Canon 5D Mk II + White balance - 02-28-2011, 07:50 AM

For those who have had yours for a while now: how does this camera determine white balance?

A fellow photog and I were shooting at the same time, same place, same cameras + flash using AWB setting (no hate about AWB, please!). Her images had a more magenta cast and mine looked distinctly yellow.

Afterwards I tried to figure out what would have made the difference, but not having hers in front of me, I couldn't determine why our LCDs would show show so differently. I haven't changed the WB settings in the camera to shift one way or the other.

Thoughts?

I am not surprised that they are different. The camera doesn't see the light source and set white balance. I wouldn't be to concerned with the differences because the camera sets the WB from the scene and not the actual light source.

Were you using the same modes and picture styles?

Steve, I think that has to be it. I have a custom picture style I set for myself (even though they go into LR I like to see things look a certain way on the LCD). I didn't think that would be that much of a difference, though. I guess I'll go back to neutral :)

Lonnie, I was trying to figure out what would cause a difference in the interpretation of the scene. When pretty much everything is the same, why did mine show so yellow and hers cooler? I guess picture style might have had something to do with it.

Thanks, guys.

I don't know how it decides WB, but I know I am smarter than my 5D2 and set it myself.

I don't think picture styles have any (or much) bearing on WB.
