Unhappy FUJI S2 pro - "Card Not initialized" - 04-04-2011, 09:56 PM

I have a Fuji Fine pix S2 Pro, and I am getting a dreaded error: "No Card" or "Card not initialized" whenever I try to take pictures with my card. I have a 512 MB card, and then bought a 4gb NEW card, and it did the same thing. Camera turns on fine, it LOOKS like I am ready to take a pic, but whenever I do hold the shutter, nothing happens for a long time.. sometimes it finally "shoots", displays the pic on my screen, but then a error pops up saying there is no memory card, or card is not initialized.

I don't have the option on my menu available to format the card.

I did format both cards in FAT on my computer via the card reader.

Nothing has helped. What do I do?

And does anyone know of a camera repair place in Tyler or Longview TX that might look at it?

J....the Fuji S2...I think that camera will only see a 1gig or 2gig non-UDMA card...you need to get a San-disk class I or II card...make sure it does not have the UDMA...you should be ok...in other-words buy the cheapy cards...

If you still need it fixed I have two dead sensor Fuji-S2's....in 8.5+ shape I will sell you at a killer price for each for parts...!!

Let me know...

Hi,
Thanks.. well hopefully I wont need parts for my cam, if that is what you mean...

I'm new to the photog world, so what is UDMA? I bought the 4gb from Walmart, is was just some random Sans disk brand card they had for $30 ;D

What specifically should I shop for? I LOST the original card I'd been using and I am not sure now what kind it was, its very possible it was different than the 2 CFs i have tried.

ebay as a last resort. Newegg? Amazon? B&H Photo? My gadget bag? Oops, mine is 8Gb. Actually, Walmart may have them. I bought my wife a camera for Christmas at Walmart. They had older, slower, generic cards from Sandisk and PNY.
The problem with old stuff: It's not cheap.
I live in the area. I don't know of any repair shops. The Camera Shop in the Hallmark Shop on the Loop in Longview MAY have the card you need. He won't be cheap.
Good luck.

You can pick up the slower cards from Office Depot - Ritz/Wolf - or Walgreens....

Stick to 2GB and smaller cards. Larger cards are a different format and I'm not sure the Fuji supports them.

Thanks. I will check my walgreens. Walmart only carries 4g cards.

Will the card have anything on it so I know it's compatible? (that non-udma thing?) Amy brand I should look for? The walmart 4g was a san disk..

I hope it works! I am a new photog and just learning on some friends/family, and it would be a huge loss if this camera broke right in the middle of my learning!

Walgreens @ Broadway & 5th in Tyler lists 2 2Gb CF cards. Either will work.

Compact Flash card| Walgreens

I know Tony is correct, but I find it hard to believe that the Fuji won't recognize a larger card. Lisa's antique Nikon Coolscan 885 recognized the 8Gb CF card that I use in R2D2. Go figure.

The nicest thing about the Fuji body...........Nikon F mount.

I think that you do, but I could be wrong. Try putting the camera in the Playback Mode and then press the Menu button bring up the Playback Mode Setup Menu. I think that the Erase option either lets you format the card or erase all images that are not protected.

I also found this information from about a year ago on the DP Review Forum:

Some problems that could be occurring is a recycle bin and a card that is not properly mounted/unmounted.

What would happen is this: people would attach the card to the computer and delete using the computer. This can create a recycle bin on the drive. The next thing is that the card might be "unmounted," in that many people will just pull the memory card out of the reader and stick it into the camera without first unmounting the card.

This leave the card in an "open" state which the S2 Pro cannot properly read.

The solutions:
1) make sure there's no recycle bin on the card;

2) plug it into your computer, and then properly unmount the drive using the taskbar, then pull the card out of the reader after you've been told it's safe to remove the card.

Also, only format in FAT format, since that's what the S2 Pro can see; not FAT32.

Hope it helps,

I'm afraid we missed the forest for the trees. Can't you return the 4Gb card to Walmart in exchange for a 2Gb card? Actually, having 2Gb cards isn't a bad thing.
