Is my Sigma focus motor going out/What is this lens worth Sigma 27-80 f/2.8 - 04-11-2011, 10:16 AM

So I own a Sigma 27-80 f/2.8 that is at least 6 yrs old and I just noticed this weekend something may be wrong with it. When I use the focus ring it feels tight and and makes a loud noise. The noise I hear kinda sounds like when you take and electric screwdriver and try and turn the bit/head.

So I'm guessing it's time to order my 28-70L or the 24-105L? Is the lens even worth having someone look at it?

Thanks
W

does this lens allow manual focus if it is in the AF mode? Many don't and trying to do so will result in this exact-sounding failure.

I'll have to give them a call to see what the cost to repair it. I'm also looking for a reason to order "the brick."

Just put the Siggy on the 7D and at first no sound. Then I switched to AF and messed around with it. When I switched it back to manual it started with the loud noise. Now to decide what to do

William, I would just trash the Sigma, but be warned, you cant just throw it in any old trash can. The are considered hazardous material and need special handeling. Send it to me, and I will take care of it for you, no charge.

define "messed around with it". Did this include manually focusing it?

I put the lens on. Switched it to M and there was not tension or noise when I focused. I then switched it to AF and focused on a couple of items at various distances. Then I switched back to M and the noise and tension appreared. I then tried switching back and fourth for a while but the noise and tension never went away

When you are focusing in AF, is the camera doing it or are you twisting the manual focus ring?
