Best lens for Rebel T1i? - 04-26-2011, 10:38 PM

So i want a new lens, but my body is a rebel t1i. right now i'm looking at the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM but i know that since i don't have the best body for the lens, my angle won't be as wide, right? any suggestions? i'm a beginning photographer and i think i know the gist of things but i'm not an expert on lenses so i really do want some advice. are there better recommendations than that 24mm lens? also, what's the best lens that i could get a good wide angle even though my camera will crop it? if that makes sense
i already have the 50mm 1.8

Get a 50mm 1.8 or a 35mm 2.0. Both are pretty cheap. Learn how to shoot with them, and it will help you learn to recognize WHAT you need. Your camera is perfectly fine for learning photography and making great images.

I would also suggest getting the book Understanding Exposure by Peterson. Go through that book with your 50mm 1.8 or 35mm 2.0.

And have fun!

Bodies come and go .. most lenses are going to outlive your camera, so its worth the money to buy more expensive lenses. L glass from Canon holds its value pretty well on the secondary market as well - most of the time you can get a large percentage of your original investment back if you decide to sell it.

There are wider zoom ranges than the 24-70 if you're worried about it not being wide enough... but really, it depends on what you're trying to shoot.

Eaharvin, if you're after a wider view you could look into the 10-22mm EF-S lens that's made for Canon crop bodies. You might consider renting it first to see if it's really what you're after.

Also consider if you ever plan on going FF, the "s" lenses wont work. They are mechanically designed for crop's
