I want to learn to take portrait shots of my family and friends (my lab mice ).

My question for all of you, is what is an inexpensive set up to buy to learn with; IE: lighting, and backdrops, ...something adequate to get decent shots. Since this would only be family and friends (no pay) I want to keep it as economical as possible.

If you're wanting to do studio-type stuff and you want rock-bottom prices for the whole shebang then take a look at Cowboy Studio's all-in-one kits:

I started with walmart work lights, bare walls and sheets to decide if that realm was anything I wanted to even dive off into. After 50 dollar investment I knew what i wanted to do.

+1 on this. I started out that way too; Using work lights and sheets. It gets a good feel on what direction you want to take your photography in.

I have since upgraded to studio lights, and plan on moving to lights for outside use :D
