Worth the money to CLA an old Canon 28-135 IS lens - 05-04-2011, 09:42 AM

I have an ancient Canon 28-135 IS I bought used many years ago that could use a good CLA. I have no idea what Canon charges for such a service. Anyone know a ballpark figure for lens service from Canon or an alternative service vendor?

It also depends on the age of the lens. Lenses fall off of Canon's approved repair list in 8-10 years. Even "L" lenses. As I found out the hard way.

Thanks Wayne I was not aware of that. I'm guessing that this lens is probably 6-8 year old. The first thing the online repair form asks is the serial # and purchase date of the lens. I bought the lens used so I have no idea when it was purchased. Might be more trouble than it is worth.

however.............

From what I recall, if the lens model is listed and they let you enter a serial number, the lens is still in the ok to repair status. Make up a date.
The problem I had was my 17-35 lens wasn't on the list where they ask for serial number & purchase date.

I would be interested in what you find, so post your results please. I've nicnamed my 28-135IS "Hoover" since it is a virtual vacuum cleaner when it comes to sucking dust. No definite visible impact but it can't be helping the already weak sharpness.

Results? Two years ago Canon returned my 17-35 L lens unrepaired. "It was too old." Bah! 8 years for a pro level lens is too old? Thanks Canon.
