On Nikonrumors.com:
According to Quesabesde the Nikon D700 replacement is postponed till October 2011 and the Nikon D4 is expected to be announced in early 2012. This delay was caused by the earthquake in Japan.

Thanks, Ken. I've been thinking about picking up a Nikon body and lens to ease into the transition of shooting two systems. Considering the D700 and 24-120 f/4, which B&H sells as a kit.

I've never been an advocate of "Don't buy that because this other thing is about to come out" but I think right now is a particularly bad time to buy the D700 because of the high prices. If you can find one selling for what they sold for a few months ago then it might be worth it but the prices really shot up after the quake it seems. I think that would be a better reason to simply wait a bit and then either buy the replacement or buy a D700. I think the price will come back down.
Thom Hogan, a long-time observer of Nikon product releases, seems to think that the D700 replacement will not come before the end of the year. He's just speculating like everyone else though. No one really knows the answer besides Nikon and they're not giving up the goods.

You should start shooting medium format film instead. Buy an epson perfection and a rollei TLR or Bronica ETRSi or something and youll have a bigger sensor (negative) and still spend less than a nikon D700.

brad | I agree with this regardless of the system you are shooting. Prices across the board for all systems have shot up a hefty amount due to the EQ in Japan.
The same "delays" are being said about Canon as well with nothing being announced or to really come out till 2012. There may be a December release of something but most indications across the board for companies is 2012 will kick off with new systems. Canon had even delayed the delivery of their way over due new super telephoto lenses to an unknown delivery date now.
I would say try and find a used on that someone is not using then get that lens from B&H used or another local shop. With the hike in prices right now is not the time to be buying new bodies or glass.

Good idea about waiting until prices settle back down. I'm in no rush.
Regarding film, I'm not interested, but thanks for your advice anyway.

Having two D300's in the bag I have decided not to try to upgrade to anything newer for a while. I love getting the newest stuff on the market, but with finances and the economy the way it is, I shall be satisfied with what I have. (For now or until I can save enough money without my wife knowing! LOL! Just kidding.)
My advice would be to look at the D700 and not to wait for the new line. And John, you have some great equipment already! IMHO.

This is something that I've been thinking about for a couple of years, and I'm just now in a position to be able to begin the transition.
