580 ex problems - 05-19-2011, 11:19 PM

I recently had a problem with my 580ex flash unit. I was shooting a college graduation thursday and was getting good exposure at iso 500, f/5.6 with the flash on about 1/8 to 1/4. I shot a different graduation in the same auditorium with the same procession on saturday and had to shoot at iso 250 f/5.6 and the flash turned down to 1/126 and i was still blowing quite a bit out. Anyone have some tips or anything that might be wrong? Called Canon and they said it was probably a metering error but I shoot everything in manual. if i flip the mode to ettl i can get the flash to give a proper exposure, but cannot get anyone close by turning the unit power all the way down in manual. I checked camera and flash unit and there is no flash compensation.

I intended to reply to a different post. I clicked on this post accidentally and then posted to it before I realized that I had made a mistake - hence the term "erroneous post". I then went on to blame my erroneous post on my own "fat fingers". Sorry if it was confusing.

As you were . . .
