Thank you! Most definitely.

The problem with the rental lights will be how to power them. The power pack has to be "plugged" in to a power source. If there is power avaliable, then that is the way I would go.
It has no power sources around, I've had to rent the a/c converter for an on-location shoot before. I'm looking at the site tonight (5:30p) so I'll report back later on.

. Is shade avaliable, what about a way to pose them? What if it rains? Is there power to plug into avaliable?
o.0 what IF it rains?? Haha, the shoot is June 3rd and you know how Texas is for unexpected weather. I'm guessing I would be looking for a covered area, or offer to do inside their home as backups?

Also, do you know how to use and adjust these lights?
Yes, I've learned Dynalite at school and have gone on location with one head in the past. Never have worked with more than one head on-location, only in studio. I've never worked with umbrellas either, just a standard soft-box. I've planned to rent the pocket wizard as well as an A/C converter since there's no plugs anywhere around.

Ah, I'd really have to get a demo on this flash setup you're suggesting. I'll try to find one on youtube.

Again, thank you all.

Here's an example of the on-location shoot I'm talking about from the beginning of this year. Would have changed things for this shot, lighting is too much to the side I think. Learned a lot more since this. Anyway, this was with a softbox. I have no idea how to use umbrellas. I have a feeling I'm going to be searching for some setups tonight.

ahem, don't mind the off-looking color. just showing the lighting...

Two links that might help you:

Discussion of group shots using monolights. Sounds like a lot of people are using the setup that i mentioned with a light on each side at about a 45 degree angle to the group and sometimes one in the middle.
Group Picture Lighting - Pro Photo HOME

The strobist talkig about group shot lighting. Mostly discussing indoor but many principles carry over:

Thanks Brad, you've helped out a lot. I'll be doing my homework tonight. Hopefully ease my mind a bit.

My pleasure. Hope it works out. Be sure and have your display set to show the overexpose blinkies. It's easy to overexpose with fill-lights in sunlight. Ask me how I know. I cringe at one memory of a white easter dress that I didn't catch.

Ah, the horror haha- definitely something I have to double check. I couldn't talk her out of the white shirts as the kids have already bought them. I'm thinking I could tether to my laptop to really see the photos.

I scouted the area today, there's a nice spot with fairly nice shade next to a nice short woodsy looking fence. Really nice short grass as well. A few more areas as backup. And I've thought of a couple areas nearby I could take them in case of rain. Things are coming together very nicely and I can definitely give another big thanks to you all.

Update: So the guy at Arlington Camera is great. He got me set up with exactly what I needed.

Here's what I'm renting for the shoot:
2 580EX (I have my own flash already for the 3rd light)
2 Umbrella Adapters w/ shoe
2 13' stands
2 45'' umbrellas
2 battery packs for the flashes
Flash meter
And I wanted a lens to play with so he suggested the 24-70 2.8L

I'm so ready for this! :)

(and this totalled much less than what I was originally going to get.)

Oh nice!! The lighting should definitely be enough and if that lens is anywhere near as good as Nikon's 24-70 then it should treat you right! Best of luck. :)
