I dont really carry my dslr around all of the time but when i do want to have a small camera with me i carry along our Canon S400 point and shoot.
the camera has been dropped once or twice ed: and is prolly best off being replaced. This just begged the question, what point and shoot do you guys use as a quick alternative to your larger dslr?

Nothing yet, but I've kinda got my eyes on the new Nikon P5000, whenever the price comes down some.

Well, considering I use 1-series Canon's w/L 2.8 lenses, my 5D w/28-135 IS feels like a P&S most of the time. But when I want to go smaller I use an Oly C8080 - this camera rocks the P&S world! Arguably the best P&S ever made. It has an outstanding lens (wide too - 28mm), shoots RAW, and has decent noise characteristics for a P&S. There going used for new (or higher) prices if you can find one...

I do most of my shooting with a Nikon D200 but before I got it, I used a Canon G5. I still have it and keep it in my backpack that I take to work. You never know when we get an unusual aircraft, some weird damage to the plane or a famous person in the terminal.
I'm looking to get something a little less bulky that i can keep in my pocket at all times.

If I think I'll be somewhere that I can take pictures without being rude, I'll take my dslr. Otherwise, I carry my Canon Powershot A510. It's only a 3.2 mega pixel but it has served me well and I even got a couple of good art-shots with it. Plus it's small and unobtrusive which makes it great for taking party/blackmail photo's. I usually carry it anywhere I don't intend to be taking pictures or anywhere I'm worried about my dslr being stolen.

I actually carry an S2 IS. I used to own an S1 IS before it got stolen. Anyways, it gets me into sporting events, and or vacations to sketchy countries etc where my DSLR sometimes gets me booted out.

i started out with a canon g5 and i absolutely loved the flip out swivel screen. it worked great for low angle type shots etc.
i wonder... does the newer g7 have a flip out screen as well. lemme go check that out.

Canon S3 IS....Nice little camera. I guess it's large for a P&S, but small compared to the Mark IIn.

Since I just ordered my first DSLR about an hour ago, a Pentax K100D, I'll share my P&S choice: an Olympus XA2. They're cheap (~$40), they have a sharp Zuiko lens and they're very small.

Being new to the forum, I'm now reading to catch up, so I'm a bit behind on this thread. As does Mark, I also use an Olympus 8080 along with my 5D. Besides good color and reasonably good sharpness, it shoots RAW files and I can do close-up work that I can't do with the 5D's 24-105 or my 100-400. A friend recently bought the Nikon P5000. I played with it a little one evening and was really impressed. The 10MP files are impressive for a P&S.

The 5D is something of a "Dream-Come-True" camera. It has speed, sharpness and functionality that is just incredible ( I have the L lenses). Having been a dedicated film shooter who first dappled with digital back in 1996 (a Polaroid 1.8MP flat looking thing we put on a tripod and tethered to a computer for doing product shots for a 800 page catalog - it was perfect for what the needed at the time), and then to a small HP P&S and then to the 8080. The 8080 shooting in RAW really opened me up to digital shooting, but the 5D has opened a whole new world of photography for me. Now, commercial shooting for my design clients is growing rapidly and I love it. My art side is taking on whole new levels. I guess I can hardly say enough good about this camera. It almost seems like it just can't get any better with the 35MM format (oh, how I would love to have a digital Hasselblad H2!!), but you know how it goes with this technology. Give `em 6 more months and the next generation will appear!
The 8080 takes both XD and CF, at the same time. You can push a button to switch from one to the other. I don't know why they designed the camera that way, but it has been nice to have a second storage device. The only issue I've ever had with the 8080 is that it is a bit slow. But I was using it for studio work and landscape shooting, so speed wasn't a big issue. It's speed is a bit sluggish for fast street shooting type work, but it works. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
