Good camara's under $400? - 01-15-2008, 07:48 PM

Hi, I haven't been on this forum for a while, but I was wondering if someone would be able to help me out.
My current camara broke, which is very sad.
I'm hoping to buy a new one soon, but can't decide on one.
I know I can't find a really, really nice camara for under $400, but that is my buget.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I've been look at some Canons

So far, the reviews i've looked at makes it sound pretty good.
Thanks so much!
-Kelsey.

As I am partial to Canon, because I use Canon, I would say take a look at the Canon S5 IS. $329 brand new. It is a point and shoot with numerous advanced capabilities, with many of the settings of dSLR's including Manual, aV, and tV. A friend of mine has the older S3 IS, and it is a great little camera. It has image stabilization, which will suit you well when shooting macro, flowers, and gummy bears :)

S5 is a very nice prosumer camera. larger glass & larger sensor make a huge difference.

If any of you are willing to help;

What are the main differences between the first three silver camaras?
I looked at reviews, and most said they were all really good.
Is the price difference just because of megapixels and such?
Thanks!
I'd really like to get an slr, but I can't afford all of the lenses, upkeep, etc.
So these camaras seem second best.

The cheaper of the three doesn't have IS (Image Stabilization) and it has 3x optical zoom with 4x digital zoom. It's obviously the cheaper of the three. The other two have IS, and an equal or greater range of "optical" zoom. You should prefer as much optical zoom as you can get as compared to "digital" zoom, as it is your cameras processor that creates digital zoom, and image degradation. If you're only using it for web based jpegs though, it won't make much difference.

I still stand by my original recommendation (the only black camera in that row) of the S5IS. You won't outgrow the functions available on that camera anytime soon, and it has 12x optical with 4x digital, and I belive the sensor is bigger on that camera. (less noise)

I'll second Mike's opinion on the S5IS. They're great cameras.
