Prime decision - 01-07-2006, 03:44 PM

I bought the 20D last month, and have been trying to decide what lens(es) to get to take advantage of the triple rebates. I have the zooms I want and can afford (I'd love either the 70-200 F2.8 IS or the 100-400L, but they are too far above my budget). I've been thinking about the 28 F1.8 as a good low-light lens with more coverage than my 50 F1.4 (I know some people rave about the Sigma 30 F1.4, but that's not included in Canon's rebate). If I get that for $400 from B&H, the extra $130 rebate will make it only $270. I've also been thinking about the 85 F1.8. It gets great reviews and would be a good head and shoulders portrait lens on the 20D. I worry that it wouldn't be different enough from my 100 F2.8 macro. Have any of you used the 85 for basketball? If I get the 85 as well, that would add another $160 to my rebate. In effect, I could get both the 28 F1.8 and the 85 F1.8 for $470, including shipping. ($760 from B&H, but the two lenses would add $290 to my currently $100 rebate) That seems like quite a deal. I suppose if I find I don't use them enough, I could always sell one or the other, and get the Tokina 12-24 (something I've been wanting for a while).
Any thoughts? Am I missing anything? I know the 28 has a reputation for softness in the corners wide open, but I don't care too much about the corners in low-light. For landscapes I'd either be shooting it stopped down or more likely using my 17-40L, which gives great results.

I have the canon 28mm f/1.8, and I like it. It offers a very usable field of view on a 1.6x crop body (equivalent to 45mm in full-frame terms) for "all-around" shooting. It's construction is very similar to the 50 f/1.4, but the 28mm has ring-type USM and a non-extending front element. And those two lenses are almost identical in size and weight.

I haven't found softness (when wide-open) to be a real issue. You have to understand the DOF is shallow. I think the images it produces are excellent in quality (when used properly).

Thanks for the reply. It's good to hear good things about the 28. I love my 50 F1.4, but it would be good to have a field of view closer to the classic 50 on 35mm. My only problem if I get these two lenses (the 28 and the 85) will be that I'll no longer be able to fit all my gear into one camera bag. I suppose I'll have to start deciding what to take with me before I go out shooting.
