To ball or not to ball. That is my question - 07-07-2009, 01:32 PM

I can see that a ball head would be quick to set up for a single shot or a pan set but what about shots where you might change the vertical component? Are some of the less expensive ball heads adjustable in tension so you can move the camera around without playing with the lever/knob?
I am thinking of a Manfrotto,Benro or Giottos with head in the $250 range. As for what I shoot, anything and nothing in particular. I am not concerned with portability but wind resistance and the head being able to take the weight of 4-5 lbs of camera without creeping or jiggling.

FWIW, I use Manfrotto 3011BN Tripod and Manfrotto 488 Ball Head. I like it, but wish I could have bought a quick disconnect version.

Kevin, I use a Manfrotto 488RC0 ballhead. It has a quick disconnect also, and it's just about $115 for the ballhead.
If I had it to do over, I'd get the 488RC2.
They both hold up just over 17 pounds of gear, but the QR foot is smaller on the RC2.

You are free to check it out any time and see what you think before you buy.

Alan,
the 488RC2 is on the short list but some of the others have the neato gizmo degree markings. That is if I ever figure out if I can photostitch.
