Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO D Lens - Canon Mount - 09-04-2009, 11:58 PM

What do you guys think of this lens...

Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO D Lens - Canon Mount

I just want to try out some basic sports photography but don't have the ends for a hugh telephoto lens. They're selling it for like $500 and I'm only shooting my nephew's flag football during mid afternoon, so if the lens doesn't workout it wouldn't be a great loss.

Does anyone have any experience with this lens?

Why don't you see if you can rent from borrowlenses.com or some other outfit? Just try it before you buy it.

Full size photos with the lens. A quick browse on my part noted it is a touch soft focusing and slightly perceptible chromatic aberration. Use a tripod or monopod though.

I was thinking of that, but since the lens is only $500 it wasn't a big risk on my part. Renting it from borrowlenses.com would be even cheaper, hahaha.

Considering I'm a noob, I just wanted a cheap priced lens with a long mm to shoot my nephew's flag football & actually practice shooting, lol.

Thanxs for the advice.

Thanks for the site. I figured it wasn't going to be crazy sharp considering its only $500. I just wanted to try my luck shooting sports photography with my nephew's flag football team.

Your welcome Manny. If you decide to rent or buy it I would be interested to see the photos and get your take on the lens. I shoot a lot of baseball games and I'm always looking for a good lens to get me closer to the action.

Manny, keep in mind that with that slow of a lens, you won't be able to use it for sports for later in the evening.

FWIW, I think that Sigma has discontinued that lens.
So I don't know how long they will keep parts for service either.

I use my Canon 100-400 for my sports shots. Fast is the key... here are some of the ones of my grandson's football... You will have a great time doing this, it is so fun....
