that is what kept my wife away from my gear for years. with DSLR's, she is shooting all the time. only the old hardcore folks will still play with film.

Avatar is me exiting Wakulla Springs after a 50 minute ride at 280'. Photo shot at 120' during decompression by Steve Auer - a phenomenal underwater cave photographer.

I quit counting. Before my wife added two more to the pile. One of these days I'll thin the herd.
I'm having stupid ideas about getting a leica or a Rolli TLR/hasselblad.

But out of those, the Hassel is the cheapest.

U mad bro?

Just us grumpy old men telling the young punks to get off the lawn.

Old film is great for beginners. Great way to teach shutter speeds, apertures, composition, ISO, focus.
If someone doesnt want to learn that, just get a PnS.

I learned on a PnS after i set it to manual. The point of an SLR is to have more options to express or execute your vision. If you dont know what anything on a DSLR does, or have any idea how to get what you're looking for out of it, why is it any better than a PnS. Get a PnS, set it to manual, learn all you can until you reach the limit of its capability save your self hundreds of dollars.

You dont give a kid an F1 car to learn how to drive.

You could recommend bottom barrel Canon Rebels or Nikon D40s but are they any better off than a cheapy PnS? Is the shooter going to get a better shot from the DSLR, let alone know how to use it apart from hitting Green Box and firing the trigger?

Yes they are. You get immediate results to check and make changes. You can shoot all day and print only what you like, thereby saving all that wasted print money on putting towards better lenses and better cameras.

My buddy recently jumped into the DSLR game. Snagged a D40x for $339 shipped off of KEH.com and it showed up with only 96 shutter actuations. Friggin' awesome. He is using that with a 18-55 AF-S VR lens. He's learning the ropes just fine.

I started off on a P'n'S in manual mode. Honestly, I wish I would have skipped that all together and gone with a DSLR back in 2006. I'd be far ahead if I had done that instead of using the P'n'S which was severely limited in manual mode.

So yeah, get her a D40x to start with. Then upgrade to a D7000 in a year or so after the prices come down :D
