I currently have a Canon 7D and 10-22mm and have thought about adding a full frame body...it is a matter of timing and options.
I cannot afford the 5D Mk II right now so the body would have to be the
Mk I. Would changing out my ultra-wide 10-22mm used on my 7D to the 16-35mm Mk I with a 5D Mk I offer any advantages? I like to shoot distance as well so the 7D would not be up for replacement to the 5D Mk II.
Best to wait or would the change in lens and additional body be worthwhile? | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

With a 7D in hand I'd say wait and see what comes next. If nothing else you can get a 5D II used, or save more for a new one. The classic 5D is a nice camera, but if you are used to a 7D you may not enjoy it that much.

If it were me... I'd keep the 7d... the 5dmk1 while still a good camera isnt one id get over a 7d.
id hang on to the 7d with the 10-22 lens, when the 5dmk3 version comes out then you could sell the 7d and purchase a used 5dmk2 since im sure the market will see a ton of them go up for sale...
i love my 5dmk2... its the longest ive ever owned a camera... 2.5 years so far.

The 16-35 mk1 offers f/2.8 vs the 10-22 at f/3.5. But that said, I don't think the 16-35 mk1 is better then the 10-22 in sharpness or vignette. But I've never done any real testing on that.

This is what works for me.
I loved my Canon 5D mk II and cried the day I sold it. I never liked the results form the 7D and was happy to sell it. So I traded up to the Mark IV and absolutely love it. Its not full frame but in my testing it performed 99% as well as the 5D II. The 7D was a huge disapointment in terms of clarity, super sharp focus, and noise. Normally I say "put your money in the glass" and buy the 2nd generation body, but in this case the mark IV is so much superior to either body I changed my viewpoint
Before the eartquake the new 5D mk.? was rumored to be coming out this fall and I would say wait for that. Unfortunetly , that seems to be delayed.
As for glass, I shoot 99% with 24-105 L, and the 500 f4 and do not use my 70-200 as often as most people do. I will probably add the 16-35mk II next.
Good luck and good shooting

I love my 5D1 and until the 5D3 comes out wont be upgrading to the 5D2... (unless the 1Ds4 is FF and 10fps). This being said... the 5D1 is a great body and still offers great images imo. The only thing to note about the 5D1 is the LCD is about as useful as the one on the 1D2... meaning it's worthless. The colors are horrid and images will look out of focus in the LCD but be razor sharp on the computer. I have sent my 5D1 into canon to get re-calibrated once in the time I have owned it 1yr (and I bought it used). Never had any problems with the shutter falling off or anything else.
I would say keep the 7D for all the wildlife work you do and pick up a used 5D1 for under to about 1k.... I however would not replace the 7D with a 5D1...

I appreciate eveyone's viewpoints. On the recent trip to Utah, the difference in the results at shooting at night was huge between the 5D Mk II with a 16-35mm vs the slower 10-22mm on the 7D.
I think I will hold off on the full frame for now... Until the 5D Mk III comes out. Maybe I could use the funds on a faster ultra-wide prime in that range....not sure if there is one.

Jennifer, what about a lens like the Tokina 11-16/2.8 for your 7D instead?
