Nikon Equipment Value? - 06-21-2011, 01:25 PM

Nikon D50 w/18-55mm f/1.3-5.6g ed. and a promasters digital aspherical lens 17-50mm. nd a nikon speedlight 2b600

I have an offer to trade for this & do not know Nikon values

Any ideas if this would be close to $3000

I'd say no more than 2k. Assuming this stuff is not brand new.

Way over priced! I just checked KEH:

Nikon D50 w/18-50 lens EX+ condition $325.00
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 LN-condition $364.00
SB900 flash New condition $495.00

This outfit comes to $1184. They didn't have the Promaster, but it is a far cry from a Tamron, and they are out of stock on SB600, but you see where this is going.

For comparison, you can get a new Nikon D3100 w/18-55 VR lens, Nikon 55-200 VR lens and SB-700 flash for $1177 from Amazon. Upgrade to the D5100 for $200 more.

Wow, that's a low price on the D50 with lens. Brand new the kit sells for around $1800, and I was giving it the benefit of the doubt of a barely used version selling for around $1200.

Talk about dropping like a rock...

Are you thinking Canon 50D? The D7000 kit is much less than $1800. I looked at the Nikon D50 kit briefly when I was still shooting Minolta, and it was <$1000.

Most of the bodies don't hold their value and drop more and more every year.

For instance, the Nikon D90 was once <1000 ... now its around 600. And the D60/D40 were both once around 600 and now are around 200-350.

But that's true for almost all of the DSLRs. The Value holders are the Full Frame sensor cameras (Nikon 700, D3, D3s, D3x) and Higher End Cropped Sensors (Nikon D2x, D200, D300 and D300s).

And also since people who buy the mid-range models, now want HD video included. So, if your camera doesn't have it ... it drops the price.

The following illustrates a good way to not address others on the board: (edited in after-the-fact)

This thread is garbage.

1) A Nikon D50 is a 6.1MP camera from 2005. A person would be not be a fool to pay more than $200 for a six year old digital body, they'd be an idiot. I simply would not buy one, I'd pay the same amount for a used D40/40x/60.

2) The kit lens is not an f/1.3 - 5.6, it is an f/3.5 - 5.6. It is worth <$100

3) The promaster lens is the same as the tamron. It is worth <$200

4) A good condition SB600 is worth ~$200.

5) Why are people speculating Amazon's prices on gear with which they have no experience? You are going to crush the OP's life dreams when they post this archaic scrap for sale and get nothing but taunts and laughs.

6) Next time, please start here.

Personally I'd go for the D50 over the D40/40x/60 just to get the in body focus motor. So you would laugh at the Op because their gear is older than yours? I have friends shooting with 300D Canons because they work for what they want to do.

Obviously you don't know the Op either, or you'd get the humor this thread was started with.

hes not laughing at the OP because his gear is old, he's just pointing out how incredibly overpriced he thinks his equipment is worth today.

digital bodies, especially low end models, lose value fast. cheap lenses don't have much value to begin with either.

personally I'd try to sell the two SB600's for around 150-200 each, then sell the camera + both lenses for maybe 400, and be open for bargaining.

In point of fact, I said that people would laugh and taunt if this gear was posted at the Amazon's kit prices. That jab was actually directed towards the marginally detrimental thread responses, not the OP.

I have nothing against old camera bodies, I shot on a D50 for years and loved it. However, being as this thread's topic is centered around the trade/sell value of this particular gear, I sought to keep my comments about the camera's age in the scope of its value.

You'll forgive my lack of grasp on the subtle undertones of the original post; it's hard to find humor in threads that start sub-par and are filled with bad advice.

Ok ok, I shouldn't have labelled the thread as "garbage." I hope the OP will forgive me as that brash remark was directed at some of the comments and replies that were detrimental to getting the gear sold. I meant no offense, I just didn't filter my brain.

Thank you Chris for clearing the air... I do appreciate that.

The one thing I would like to add i myself try to keep members from using the "use the search feature" or "google it" posts.. ive been told that as a beginner photog on other forums in the past and its left a very bad taste in my mouth. so when creating this forum i tried to make our forum the complete opposite of all of those others out there that ive had bad experiences with.

in regard to repetitive questions being asked etc on the forum I would rather much have members not respond with "use the search feature" etc. i ask that members either take the time to answer the question at hand, or not say anything and let someone else address it.

most times people can link to other threads etc in order to direct the original poster to the previous threads discussing the same topic. thats fine too...

i know you answered the OP question in your post and I do appreciate that I just want to state our policy on the "google it" type posts not only to help inform you but others that come across this thread as well...

i hope you understand... thanks.
