Lens colors (Canon) - 06-26-2011, 04:18 PM

Question for you all...am I imagining this, or is there a bit of a difference in colors coming from different L lenses? I rented a 35L and a 50L and I notice a bit of a difference in skin tones. The overall tones just feel different but I can't pin down why. I expected to see a difference between the 50L and my humble 1.8 but I was surprised by a difference between 35 and 50.

There is that, but the color seems different, too somehow.

Same camera, camera position, light, subject, etc.? Otherwise, there are too many variables to know for sure.
That said, there are folks who feel that other lens brands yield better color than Canon. But that's a different story.
Controlled testing is the only way to know for sure.

ps: Folks have been debating color rendention in lenses since color photography began. There are differneces. From brand to brand and focal length to focal length within the same brand. Coatings make a big difference too. These topics aren't discussed much at TPF, but are debated to distraction on other forums.

Meh I don't want debate ad nauseum. I was just wondering if I was seeing things. The tones felt different somehow. I know that my 70-200f4 definitely has its own color but I can't explain the specifics. I was wondering if different Canon L lenses got different coatings or something like that.

That being said, it is more contrasty and sharper than the 50f1.2 I rented. I'm saving up for one or the other...I'm not sure what POV I prefer yet.

I only have 2 L's and color is differently different . [ 35-350 and 70-200 II ]
There is a difference in the 28 , 35 and 50 mk 1 . I figure it is different lens coatings .
