So I have the Canon brand grip on my 5Dmkii and the other day when I went to take the grip off the dial that you use to tighten and loosen the 1/4-20 screw on the other side made a crunch sound and now just spins freely.....

This ever happen to anyone else? What did you do?

That's not good. A lot of times when this happens, you literally have to hacksaw off the grip, because there's no way to get it off.

This is a major issue with all Canon grips, they use a stupid plastic gear that can easily strip by over-tightening. This is why I never tighten mine very much.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. 8-(

I had it happen once and the grip was still under warranty so I had it replaced by Canon.

If your grip is still under warranty you may want to contact Canon for servicing. They have a way to remove it and then repair it.

Otherwise depending on how much gap you have between the grip and camera you may be able to use a flat plier to untighten it. Be careful and don't damage your camera to save the grip.

Thanks for the replies, I will have to check on the warranty period, or just leave it on forever.....

Yeah, probably best to leave it on until you sell or have an absolute reason to take it off.

@david, I actually bought the 5D because I wanted the option to have a grip or not. If I was okay with it being permanent, I'd have just bought a 1D. I like the flexibility to have both options, you know?

Rob, search for "stuck Canon grip" and see if there are any other solutions out there. From what I've seen, you pretty much have to destroy the grip, to get it off - ugh!

ugh is right :(

and I agree with being able to change it up, the 5D with grip and a 70-200 2.8 is a beast... the 5d with no grip and a standard lens is a breeze to carry around

I had this happen to me and I was able to carefully get a small and thin screwdriver in the opening under the wheel and eventually was able to get it unscrewed enough that it popped off. Once off, I found the part online and replaced it myself.

cg2-2404

If you order the part before you go messing with a screwdriver, you can get a better feel for how to take it off.

I think Canon wanted like $150+ to fix it if I remember.
