Nikon D300 af trouble - 07-21-2011, 06:53 PM

Every time I have my camera on auto focus the shutter won't work. It will focus but not take the photo. If I use manual focus it's fine. Anyone have this problem?

I am experimenting the same problem with this camera, I am not sure what can be but probably is service time, I am using it every weekend. If somebody knows what the problem is please posted to help us.

Thanks
Luis

You do not state which lens you are using, but if it has a focus lock switch, check that first. Have you tried changing to another lens?

Are you using Single servo or Continuous servo and shutter or focus priority?

Which Focus Mode, etc.

Provide a little more information and maybe someone can help.

Taylor:

As you obviously know, with the focus setting of Continuous-servo, release priority, the D300 shutter should activate even if focus has not been achieved. I understand those are your settings and when you press the shutter release the lens focuses, but the shutter does not activate. Do you get a solid green light in the viewfinder focus indicator?

I know this is elementary, but here are a couple of things I would do.

Try it with another lens.

Try setting the D300 focus mode to Single-servo AF and the AF-Area mode to Single Point AF. With these settings does the little green focus indicator light in the viewfinder give a solid light indicating focus lock has been achieved?

One other thing you may try is this unpublished procedure that came from a Nikon repair tech.

1. Hold down the two green buttons for 3 seconds.(Qual and +/- EV buttons)
(This is the two button reset described on pg 184 of he user manual)

2. Go into the Custom Settings menu (Pencil Icon) and click
Reset Custom Settings.

3. Turn the camera off
Remove the battery
turn switch ON
Hold down the shutter button for 20 seconds
Turn switch OFF
Replace the battery
Turn Camera ON

Having done the above, if the problem still exists, then it is probably a trip to Nikon repair.

Another suggestion is to turn off the focus from the shutter button....I always use the AE-L/AF-L button to control the focus you can find that in the menu area....

Just in case here is the steps:

Menu - Setup (the picture of the wrench) - the item is F6 - then AF-ON needs to be selected...Now your AE-L/AF-L button controls your focus and your shutter button is just for the shutter....

Hope this helps...

I have held the two green buttons down, I do that before every shoot. Thank you for the other steps I'll put them to the test.

I just tried it and so far so good.

In the a Autofocus menu there is an option called AF activation. Is that on AF-ON only or Shutter/AF-ON?
