D7000 focal point help pleeeez! - 07-23-2011, 10:23 PM

I just upgraded from the D80 to the D7000 and am having a hard time with the focal point. I am so used to the D80 and using the toggle switch to move the focal point to where I want it to be. Reading the manual on the D7000, it seems that I should be able to do that with this camera too, but have not been able to figure it out. I get so many focal points that I am not sure which one to follow and my toggle switch doesn't help. Know it sounds crazy but is there anyone familiar with the D7000 that might be able to tell me what I am missing here.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sharon - would you mind sharing what settings you have for your AF? This would give us a headstart as to where to start with the help. :)

I'll toss this up there, I'm not much of a Ken Rockwell fan, but here is a write up of the AF features on the D7000: Nikon D7000 Autofocus Settings

Thanks so much Ken! I was using the AF-S & AF-C & AF-A It was really throwing me off with all the little squares moving about and I could not figure out where I was focusing. I just browsed thru the Ken Rockwell link that you posted. I needed to use the front command dial to get my focal point (1,9,36...) and then I can toggle to move it to where I want it. I have just been so used to manually choosing my focal point with the D80, I think I am going to have a hard time letting the camera do that for me. It's definitely going to take some getting used to. Thank you again for your help. I know I am just going to need to play with different settings and get used to it :)

Ken, do you have the D7000? Just curious how you like it, if so.

Sharon - it's a excellent body for the price. For me, the size became an issue as it was too small for my grubby hands.

I also purchased the battery pack for it, so it seems so big for me compared to the D80but I think I am going to like it. I just struggle with change. I know it has had excellent reviews. Going to Mississippi tomorrow to the Youth World Barrel Racing Championships, so am going to put it to the test with the 70-200 in colesium lighting. :)

I got the D7000 a couple of weeks ago as a companion to my D700.
After all the raves about the ISO capabilities of the D7000 I have to say I was really disappointed.
Compared to the D300 which I owned before the D7000 I don't notice any difference at the ISO performance. The only advantages of the D7000 are the 16MPix and the video capabilities (which I don't use).

I put mine through it's paces this weekend and am very happy with it so far Andre'. Compared to the D80, the ISO low lighting capabilities on the D7000 are awesome. As for the video capabilities, I am with you. I could care less. I found it funny that everyone I talked to about D7000 (when shopping & researching) was trying to sell the fact that it had video capability. LOL
