mount SLR to telescope - 07-25-2011, 04:41 PM

Hello,

I've searched the forum for an answer, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Is there a product (or products) that would allow one to mount their SLR to a telescope to take photos of galaxies and what not?

I'm sure this exists, I just don't know what to search for at B&H or in google.

Thanks!

A quick search of B&H showed this:

Meade SLR (35mm OR Digital) Camera Adapter 07356 B&H Photo Video

Bushnell SLR (35mm OR Digital) Camera Adapter 780104 B&H Photo

Meade SLR (35mm OR Digital) Camera Adapter 07352 B&H Photo Video

There are lots of others. I just searched SLR telescope mount.

Just be careful. Those little screws that hold the mounts in on telescopes are just tiny little screws and aren't made to hold a lot of weight. I always wrap my camera strap around the telescope and shorten it so if the mount comes loose my camera won't hit the ground.

It's manual focus, which is pretty hard to get looking at the live view through the telescope. I think the next full moon I'm going to try and tether my camera to the laptop and see if I can do better at nailing focus.

How far away does something have to be so that the telescope can be set to infinity focus?

I've got one of those Pro Optic 500mm f/5.6 spotting scopes from Adorama with a Nikon T-Mount adapter on it. Not really sure how close (or far) from infinity the little multi-turn focus knob is when shooting the moon.

Take Care,

With the adapter, you don't have much room to play with as far as focus goes. My infinity focus is about a nose hair from being all the way in.

The hardest part is getting the camera still, then having the dials set up for the shot. When you have all that weight on the end, it moves around a lot. I also get quite a bit of CA with the telescope. It's not a high dollar job, just my daughter's Celestron Astromaster 70EQ.

This is using the telescope with some cropping.

This is as focused as I can get with the 2x barlow attached. It's just a little shy of what I need to be able to get. Not cropped at all.

Check this site out. I bought the one for my canon and it works good.
