It is genius.
I do think only pro's are going to be using it, though.

How about the one person wedding shooter tasked with capturing stills & video?

From what I read, only if they plan on changing the soundtrack.

I think more people will be using camera's like the Red(or whatever else comes out) and just pulling frames from the video in the future.
Of course that doesn't work well with strobes, but you could do a lot of PJ stuff that way.
The stills from video concept surfaced 6-12 months ago. Has it caught on outside the web journalistic blogging world?

On something as "mundane" as Clemmons entering a courthouse - not that big of a deal, but imagine doing this as a routine at all pj shoots, and that once in a lifetime moment occurs (I'm thinking something like Lee Harvey Oswald being shot by Jack Ruby) and you not only get the still shots, but you also get video footage. Might mean a mega payday for that reporter/pj.
Or think of the implications of sports shooting -- goal line situation, and you catch all the stills and a good running video of the whole sequence.
But instead of a full DSLR, why not something like a full hd go-pro helmet cam?
Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!
You bring up a very good point.
When you're covering something that is attracting a considerable amount of intention, it would behoove you to cover your basis because anything can happen at anytime. Y'know, a crazed fan, a stalker, or possibly something not even remotely related to the event that happens right nearby.
There has been precedent of things happening nearby but people don't quite have the proper equipment to take advantage of the moment.
okay, now my insomnia is making me talk crazy.

No doubt!
I'm sure most have seen this, but here a link to a write up from Vincent Laforet with a full res frame grab:

Doug's method in the OP is not a bad idea, but like what was said above, a GoPro would of probably of worked for that type of footage.
All I know is if I was planning on being a photojournalist, I would be learning video along with photography.
