I wouldn't say that. The D3000 will produce some great images. The biggest difference is in the functionality, like dual command wheels, AEB, flash commander, and stuff like that. The higher ISO is a little better, but the functionality is far better on the higher level cameras.

The problem you will likely have with a full frame is the D700 makes your current lenses less than desirable. That's another expense on top of the camera body.

Assuming you may eventually go to full frame, be careful with the lenses you buy. There are lenses made just for small sensors. They won't cover a full frame sensor.

New cameras being announced does not mean new cameras being available.

Erin I only quickly read through all the posts so please forgive me if this is a question that you have already addressed, are you familiar with the differences between a crop sensor camera and a full frame system? Of the lenses you listed I believe only 1 will be suitable for a D700 while all work well with a D300(s) body. The investment in full frame is significant once you start adding up the difference in the cost of lenses.

The D700 is an outstanding body and will give you the basis for a great system but beware the costs!

Good luck in your decision

That's right, we are talking about Nikon. They announce it on Aug 24th and won't have stock until Jan 2012 at the earliest.

All three lenses she listed will work on the D700

"Lens Compatibility at a Glance*** AF-S or AF lenses fully compatible
Metering with AI lenses" - D700 from Nikon

saw this under it "AF NIKKOR other than type G or D*2: All functions supported except 3D Color Matrix Metering II
AI-P NIKKOR: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering II
DX AF NIKKOR: All functions supported except FX-format (36x24)/5:4 (30x24) image size
Non-CPU AI NIKKOR: Can be used in exposure modes A and M; Electronic Rangefinder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster; Color Matrix Metering and aperture value display supported if user provides lens data
Type G or D AF NIKKOR: All functions supported" so perhaps I am wrong in that only one will work. This is a good think to look into.

This is true that they will be announcing the upcoming bodies to be released in 2012. However, unless you really really needs it now (and from what I am getting from her posts is she doesn't need it right this second) it might be better to wait and see what is going to be coming out and save up some more money. Then once they are released (i'd say around 6 months or so from now) pick up a previous model on the used market for a little less than what they are going for now possibly.

Chris I chose my words carefully 2 of thjose lenses I believe are DX (crop frame) lenses and although they will fit and work they are not going to take advantage of the full sensor size. Sge will either have significant vignetting or if she used the DX compatibility mode only part of the sensor will be used (around 6-7MPix I believe)
