50d freezing

I searched but this isn't the same problem.

Symptoms:
no error codes
after a shot, the preview will stay on (I have it set to 2 seconds so if it stays longer or I press the shutter the preview doesn't go away)
top lcd will continue to display all info (doesn't turn off at all)
the issue is I can't change the settings once it "freezes"

Possible fixes:
I have tried different cf cards, batteries, lenses. These don't matter.
Seems to happen more when I have the 580ex attached
Random, sometimes it happens a couple of times during a session while sometimes it happens often (like 1-2 times a minute).

Any thoughts? I am way past warranty as well.

When you took the battery out of the camera, did you also take the small watch battery out?
That one is the one that saves all the data when you swapping out the other battery.
Try removing them both for a couple of minutes and then see what happens.

I believe in the 50D, the watch battery is inside the main battery compartment. Look on the side right by the hinge for the door.


Edit: Yeah, I just checked. It's inside the main battery compartment. It's a CR2016 3V battery.

Another thought, have you changed that watch battery?

btw the way I fix the "freeze" is by turning off the camera and turning it back on.
