Where to buy long FD mount Canon Teles? - 09-01-2011, 08:28 AM

So I got to reading a recent FD conversion mount article and there is a really good adapter for FD to EF.

The particular lenses he used were big 600, 800 mm tele's which he claimed are in the neighborhood of $1500.

Honestly for that price I would be willing to play around with one for a bit and sell later if I don't like it.

Ebay turned up nothing and honestly i don't frequent any other photo forums. Anyone know where I could look?

Thanks

Go to Buy & Sell New & Used Cameras

Search in the 35mm Canon manual focus area. You may pay more but you will get a 15 day return and KEH's legendary conservative grading. DO NOT ORDER ONLINE. Call them. Talk to them. Ask them to pull the item and describe it over the phone.

There are 3rd party long, slow lenses for dirt cheap. Larry picked up a 400mm Something recently. It was advertized here at TPF.

Here you go. KEH's listings for 300 & 400 Canon lenses. Go to page 5.

Adorama and B&H both have used camera sections. KEH is like the "Amazon of used camera gear." They have a huge stock, and they check the lenses well before selling. Unfortunately, I just checked and they don't have any right now. eBay doesn't have any currently, but they have 5 or 6 recently completed listings for a 600mm, ranging from $1,400 to $2,100.

However, no FD-EF adapter is "really good," since the flange distance necessitates optics in the adapter to allow focus to infinity. Once you start adding lens elements to your system, you're starting to chip away at image quality. You're better off using a Nikon F or Olympus OM adapter. Canon made a factory adapter right when they changed from EOS mount that's at least very high quality (no worse than using a teleconverter), but they currently sell for $1,000+ on the used market.

KEH has lenses, but 400mm is the longest right now. You can set up a watch list and they will email you when the lens you want comes in. One thing to remember about KEH: Their Bargain (BGN) grade could be Mint to Mint- on ebay.

Thanks guys, just fyi, here is the article.

FD & FL Lenses on your EF Body « Canon Rumors

I think this "helps" some of the issues that adapters have with focussing.

If you get serious about long focal length manual focus lenses on an EOS body, look at Nikon and any other mounts that can be adapted to the EOS body with focus confirmation and WITHOUT any additional optics.

Ouch! $3k for a 600/4.0.

I would but honestly this seems more of just a "cheaper experiment" more than "serious super tele "

I honestly could not afford or buy the current EF super tele's, something in this price range is a 400 f5.6. This just seems to be a decent entry into 600/800 glass for fun.

If that's all you want, look for a 500mm T-mount mirror lens. Friends of mine left one with a Pentax mount at the house that didn't sell at a garage sale. Camera Co-op had the EOS T-mount. It works on R2D2.
