Because when a computer writes to a card it isn't a sequential write. The data is divided up into blocks on a card and the recovery software looks for the blocks and reconstructs them. Sometimes a block is reused sometimes it isn't.

Jim...I have an older mac program called FileSalvage....both the newer and older...work well and recover several layers back...

I did a test...and it was able to find up to 6 layers of photos on a small card...the software is not that expensive...and works better than anything for PC that I have...

Good Luck...

The entire question here is whether or not the files have been over-written. If they haven't, you can read whatever is there, regardless of the age of the file. If any part of the file has been over-written, then it's gone. Most recovery software will give you some idea of how many files were found that could not be recovered.

The main thing I don't understand is how the files got deleted in the first place. In order to format a card or delete a shot, I have to confirm that I want to do that, and I never did that.

The odd thing is that some of the files I recovered were at the tail end of the shots that I lost, but there were even some between those that were missing.

I think Stephen and Rich have convinced me that my photos are gone. I've been shooting professionally for over seven years, and this is the first time this has happened. I just wish I knew why!

You can give a try to Remo Recover (Windows)- Basic Edition software. The software can recover photos from compact flash card without any difficulty. It can recover deleted or lost photos from almost all types of storage devices including memory cards, hard drives, external hard drives, FireWire drives, etc. The software supports different versions of Windows Operating Systems like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008. You can download and install demo version of the software in your system to evaluate chances of recovery.

Actually, When you format the memory card, the photos stored on that card are not permanently deleted. Instead, only pointers are deleted making that space available for storing new photos. If you save new data over formatted memory card then the new data may overwrite your old photos, which are still present on memory card resulting in permanent loss that cannot be recovered by any third party recovery tools

Novia,

I'm sure that's what happened to my photos. I sent the card off to a data recovery company in Denver, and they couldn't recover them either. Well, I guess I've got to go back to Copenhagen.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

sounds to me as if the card is currupted - I lost about 12 shots from a wedding because the card was currupted - time to toss that one and get another... I wouldn't trust that card..

I'm having that problem now with a "NEW" Centon card. Owned several before with no problem but after looking around it seems they have a problem with newer cards, especially the 32gb class 10.

Well, I think I found the problem and it wasn't with the card. I thought it might be with my newish D7000 as I've tried several different tests to see what happens. Once I took off my third party battery grip the problem stopped happening and hasn't since. I'm not sure how that could be the issue but I did notice from time to time the activity light would come on on the camera and I did nothing more than move the camera.

Very odd but would sure like to know what was happening and hoping this was the problem. So far two weeks after removing the battery grip I haven't had the problem again.
