Sigma 150 mm macro - 09-20-2011, 11:00 PM

Looking for feedback on the sigma 150 mm 2.8 macro for macro use as well as portraits in low light . I have read some good reviews on this for macro use but not much on the portrait end

Rose...Here are a couple of very good write-ups about the lens...

FM Forum Write-Up
Photo-Net Write-Up
Flickr Discussion

I would think that a Sigma 85 1.4 on your D700 would be a much better pick...plus for low light you can not get much better...and if you want to use it for macro work...pick-up a set of extension tubes to use...

Here is my Minolta 85 with a Kenko extension tube on it...

Good Luck....

Thanks for the Feed back I am also wanting it for wedding work either for macro or balcony shoot . We have several bodies both FX and Dx format . So that is why I was thinking the 150mm for some double duty work

(I am not a pro-wedding photog)...got that out of the way...but I have done several weddings as a second shooter...with three lenses....on my Sony a900...

Sigma 14mm 3.5 (not fisheye)
Sony 135 1.8 Zeiss
Minolta 85 1.4

That is all I take..and I let my feet do the zooming....

You don't want to use this lens as anything but a macro. The AF is terrible and you won't want to use it for portraits. Stick to a 50, 85, 105 or 135.

Tom , thank you I was hoping you would post I saw you had one . I have all those Prime Lens and love them . Was wondering if it would be good for balcony shots with no flash . But if not Looking at a macro and anther lens for that need . I am doing a bit of upgrading and shopping but trying to keep cost from going nuts .

If you want a really fast focusing telephoto, look else where. I suppose it was quick enough to get a few BIF in focus shots on my D7k. If I was shooting a non-moving object at distance, it'd be fine. My copy has been doing well for anything closer than 20 yards, but I mostly use it in the less than 10 feet range.

It is really only specifically good for macro shots. Even then with the long focal length, close focusing and 2.8 aperture, the DOF is so thin that you can't do much with it. It is a terrible lens for absolutely everything EXCEPT macro shots. I ONLY use it for ring shots. I take about 10 pics with it and put it away. There is not reason to use it from the balcony if you have a 200 2.8 or a 135 2.0.

Ok , Ended up getting the 100 mm Macro and found a great deal on 180mm 2.8d . What a great lens. Nikon built a tank with this one , its fast and great photos.
