Camera Condoms - 09-27-2011, 11:55 PM

With the marching of the seasons, it is my hope that rain and cold would eventually come to Texas, but I'm curious as to how to handle and protect your equipment during these times.

I know basically how to help prevent fogging for the most part, but what about rain and such? I know there are specific pieces of equipment that are sold for this very issue, but I'd like to skip a costly "trial and error" spending as much as I can.

Any suggestions?

My preference is a weatherproof body and lens.

Otherwise you can go with ziplock type bags (gallon size) for most cameras. In an emergency. Otherwise the OpTech type is great.

I usually use a waterproof body and lens but if it is raining I put a Storm Jacket on the lens that can be pulled back to cover the camera when hiking. Otherwise a shower cap on the camera gives you the ability to see and use the controls.

There are more expensive alternatives than a shower cap for the camera but it has always worked for me and I have used them in my fair share of inclement weather.

I use think tank hydrophobia gear.

But it never rains, so it sits in my bag.
