The MP spec makes sense. If you extrapolate the D7000's 16.2 MP to full frame, you arrive at about 36 MP. This means that in a pinch, if you have to use a DX lens, you end up with D7000 resolution. Hopefully the sensor performance will be just as good. Sports shooters will want to stick with the crop-sensor version D400, given the ho-hum shooting speed. I agree with nikonrumors that this is basically a baby D3X, just as the D700 is a baby D3.
Headphone jack means that they're probably more serious about video, seeing as the 5D Mk II and GH2 have probably cut into Nikon's sales pretty deeply because of this. If you can headphone-monitor your recording though, then this puts the D800 ahead, especially if the new sensor is better about the jello shutter problem.
$4,000 is a little steep though. It's definitely a studio camera, so the pros will flock to it, but I'm pretty happy with my D200. I may upgrade to a D300/s if the price drops enough, but considering the different league that this is in (being both FX, and nearly triple the price) I don't see that really happening.

Sony rumors has been saying 36MP for the next FF, so it fits that the Nikon would be too.

4fps/6fps seems somewhat low, but I guess these are not-yet-confirmed-rumors...

If you change it to 14-bit mode, the frame rate goes down to 1.8 fps. Being able to shoot 4fps seems pretty reasonable, unless you feel like carrying around a desktop in a backpack to process the amount of data that a 36MP full frame sensor is creating.

Ah yeah, I didn't consider the image size. My D300 will shoot 5fps and that is >2yr old technology, but much, much smaller files.
I guess I was thrown off by recently reading the specs on the new Canon full-frame body (1DX I think?) that will shoot 14fps (or something like that). I just assumed that there would also be a monotonic "frames per second" increase in this level of full-frame bodies as well.

I just assumed that there would also be a monotonic "frames per second" increase in this level of full-frame bodies as well. | The 1DX is "only" 18MP, as the D4 will most likely be, and it also is a pro-grade shutter in a full-size body (which can hold more electronics, a bigger battery, etc). It also has THREE dual-core image processors. Still, the 14fps is JPEG-only mode, and even the 12 fps is going to likely be 12 bit. The 5D MkII can only shoot 3.9fps. Even if you could hack the D800 to shoot at a higher framerate, your battery life would go into the toilet; drainage would go up exponentially with a modest increase in performance.
So, I think if you consider the technological advancement that these presumed D800 specs offer, it's actually quite amazing, and it's a bit premature to start asking "only?"
Those pesky laws of physics, they get in the way of our dreams! I want my 50 megapixel D8000 that shoots at 30 fps (24 bit mode, thank you very much) and has 10,000 shots per charge. It would be a perfect complement to my 15-600mm f/1.4 lens that's the size of my fist, which has no optical flaws and is perfectly sharp corner-to-corner.

No reason to be that snarky about it.
It is all speculation for now anyway.

. | Just an FYI.. the D300 shoots 6fps or 8fps with a Nikon battery grip.
Technically, it can actually shoot 9fps. However, that is using a crazy work around that seems more trouble than it's worth: 9fps

I've read it will be 36Mp and use the new Sony full frame sensor. Of course Nikon gets way more out of a Sony sensor than Sony can.

That's what I am hearing. I am guessing that there will be an option to get more than 4 or 5 fps if you turn the file size down from 36 megapixels.
I heard that it will still be 51 focus points. I think that is more than enough, but part of me wishes they would be spread out a little more evenly across the frame and not all in the middle. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
