An incident light meter..........................

I rarely shoot at a subject that I can walk up to and place a meter next to, so incident meters won't help me. When I do shoot up close, I can judge the lighting well enough to avoid problems. I shot film for years and followed the rule that you should stick with one film and learn how it works. I only recently changed to digital and I'm still learning how this 'film' works, but expect that will come in time. Truthfully, its a skill I would hate to lose since it makes me more aware of the scene I am shooting, and I like that.
